John was chaplain and ethos lead for a Church of England education provider in West London from 2009-2017. Over that time, he worked on ethos development in two schools. The first was reliant for its Christian identity on local churches, selection of students by faith, and staff close to retirement. Renewal of the school's chaplaincy, its worship practices and its charitable outreach provided for integration of teaching and learning with the school's Christian commitment. The second school opened during John's time in post. With an open admissions policy in a highly diverse mixed-faith area, this school posed new challenges for creating a meaningful Christian ethos which would serve this population. In this lecture, John will outline the story of the approach which won stakeholders' commitment, the systems, structures and resources involved, and their impact.
