What You'll Learn

Hiring people who were once incarcerated is a positive practice for many organizations, resulting in employees who are well-trained, loyal, and eager to work. Yet some employers do not consider hiring people with a criminal record due to fear or bias. The cost is high to individuals and our communities for not hiring from this population, since with unemployment comes increased recidivism and failure to thrive.

In collaboration with TalentFirst and the Michigan Department of Corrections, »Æ´óÏɸßÊÖÂÛ̳ offers a professional development opportunity to explore best practices in second chance hiring. Register by October 4, 2024, at noon to secure your spot.

About the course

Focused on resources in Michigan, this short, online course taken alongside a cohort will equip HR leaders, managers, and business owners with the knowledge and skills to implement second-chance hiring. 

Following the completion of the course, participants are invited for a collaborative workshop on Calvin’s campus as well as a prison-education visit.

Cost

Cost for participation in the microcredential, transportation to the prison education visit, lunch, and workshop: $200. TalentFirst members receive a 10% discount.

Timeline

You'll have two weeks to complete the microcredential course, between October 7–21, 2024. This online course will take 2–3 hours to complete. It covers the following topics:

•    Understanding the Criminal Justice System 
•    Hiring Considerations 
•    E³¾±è±ô´Ç²â²¹²ú¾±±ô¾±³Ù²âÌý
•    Accessing Supports and Services 
•    Creating a Flourishing Culture

Those who complete the course will receive both a digital badge and, if desired, 2.5 SHRM professional development credits. 

Workshop and Prison Education Visit

November 12, 8 a.m.–3 p.m., »Æ´óÏɸßÊÖÂÛ̳

Following the completion of the course, gather with participants for a walk through of a prison education program in Michigan followed by a collaborative workshop to debrief and plan next steps. 7 SHRM professional development credits available.
