From Calvin to a galaxy far, far away
In 1977, Gary Schmidt was a camp counselor in the Catskills of New York. All summer long, he and his fellow counselors had heard campers tell stories of an amazing movie that they鈥檇 seen. But these counselors were up in the mountains, with no movie theaters nearby.聽 So, when the summer camp season came to a close, they headed together to Long Island to see what was all the rage. In fact, they saw the movie twice that day.
鈥淚n some ways, we saw it twice because of how wonderful the movie was,鈥 said Schmidt about their decision to stick around for back-to-back showings. 鈥淏ut we also knew that once it was over, that community was over too.聽 The summer camp was over; we were all going different ways 鈥 so whenever I think about it [the movie] I think about that group of people.鈥
The movie was Star Wars: Episode 4鈥攖he first movie released in the epic series.
Thinking deeply
Now 40 years later, Schmidt is an accomplished author and a professor of English at Calvin College. He wouldn鈥檛 say he鈥檚 a Star Wars fanatic, but, like many viewers of the films, he has lingering questions that have gone unanswered. But, unlike many viewers, he鈥檚 been given an opportunity to discover those answers and write a new chapter in the epic series.
鈥淚 mean, dang, who wouldn鈥檛 want to write himself or herself into the Star Wars world; it is such a great honor,鈥 said Schmidt.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Star Wars film being released, LucasFilm had the idea of having 40 stories developed about events that had to happen in the original film (Episode 4), but weren鈥檛 ever fully told. And then, each of those stories would be told from the point of view of a Star Wars character. The 40 stories, written by 40 different authors independently of one another, has been compiled into the anthology 鈥淪tar Wars: From a Certain Point of View.鈥
One of the selected authors? Gary Schmidt. The question he needed to answer? 鈥淗ow was it that Yoda discovers that Obi-Wan Kenobi has been killed by Darth Vader?鈥
鈥淭o be the guy that鈥檚 been given the opportunity to write the Yoda story鈥攖he only Yoda story in this volume鈥攖hat鈥檚 amazing. I was a little bit panicky when they gave it to me because this is going to be examined thoroughly and critiqued thoroughly,鈥 said Schmidt laughing. 鈥淵ou feel responsible. I mean, you don鈥檛 fool around with this; it鈥檚 a 40-year tradition and so many brilliant people have worked on it, and so many people care so much about this.聽 And so much has shifted since [LucasFilm] was purchased by Disney, all the hundreds of books written are now called legends, but this book is [canon] and so you feel like, 鈥極kay, get it right.鈥欌
In pursuit of answers
So, with a healthy respect for the long history of the series, Schmidt began digging for answers and developing a story. He started at the end of 鈥淓pisode III鈥 when Yoda is going into isolation in Dagobah.
鈥淪o, Flannery O鈥機onnor [a renowned American writer] said that with any story you have to begin with the eye, so your reader sees stuff. You have to be concrete. So what would Yoda bring [with him to Dagobah]? So, I made him a little nostalgic: he has one thing from Obi-Wan, a pot, and he has Qui-Gon's blanket, made of Qui-Gon's cloak. Those are his connections back to his earlier disciples, because he鈥檚 all alone, in some ways desperately alone.
鈥淪o you start with Yoda having those two things, and in a hut. Then I had to make up the planet鈥檚 seasons. When we see Dagobah it鈥檚 always wet and swampy in the second film, but suppose there鈥檚 another, a dry season, and he has to move from one [location] to another? If I have that, then I give him a reason for moving on a journey. So I have him leave his wet season place up in the hills and go down to the dry season place in the swampy areas where he鈥檚 going to plant鈥攈e has to grow food, after all.
鈥淭hat was my way of getting him moving with his pot and cloak. But then I needed for something to happen on the journey. Well, suppose the emperor is still working for him? That gives me some conflict along the journey, so that all seemed to make sense. And then I needed some humor in it, so what if he loses Obi-Wan鈥檚 pot or it鈥檚 broken during that journey and Obi-Wan, when he appears, notices it.聽 That gives the opportunity for some funny dialogue. So that鈥檚 how it all got started.鈥
Understanding Yoda
And as Schmidt develops that dialogue in this story, he uses humor to carry some really serious stuff. When Obi-Wan and Yoda meet in the story, Yoda is pushing 900 years old and in Schmidt鈥檚 mind, Yoda鈥檚 reluctance to train Luke in the next film points to his desire to instead train Luke鈥檚 twin, Princess Leia.
鈥淵oda thinks sort of like his life is over; he鈥檚 900 years old. What鈥檚 the next thing? For him, there really isn鈥檛 any?聽 He doesn鈥檛 perceive that there鈥檚 this next thing. And he鈥檚 wanted to train Leia and that鈥檚 not going to happen. So when Obi-Wan comes and gives him this kind of order, like 鈥榊ou are going to train Luke now!,鈥 at first, he responds petulantly: 鈥楢re YOU the master?鈥 But that allows me to have a lot of fun with the dialogue and, I hope, to make it really, really funny.
鈥淏ut, on the other hand, there鈥檚 a poignancy to this. I mean he鈥檚 900 years old. He鈥檚 been alone for who knows how long. He鈥檚 unhappy on so many levels. So when Obi-Wan comes, he can take on this role of comforter: 鈥業 can鈥檛 tell you what鈥檚 going to come, but you鈥檒l be surprised,鈥 he says.聽 When Yoda responds, 鈥楴o, there鈥檚 no more surprises for me. I鈥檓 900 years old,鈥 Obi Wan promises, 鈥楳aster, you will be surprised.鈥 And that鈥檚 how I see it. Who knows what will happen after we leave this life. But we will be surprised, I suspect. So, I can be serious at the same time I鈥檓 trying to be funny.鈥
Adding complexity to his character
And within the context of humor and heaviness, Schmidt develops a character with complexity.
鈥淚 wanted him to have complex emotions that are conflicting. So at the end of the story, for example, he鈥檚 about to go to sleep and he鈥檚 resigned himself to training Luke instead of Leia. But then he can鈥檛 go to sleep, because for the first time in a very long time, he鈥檚 eager for the next day. That is actually a line from Helen Keller鈥檚 story, in a scene where she has gone with Annie Sullivan, her teacher, to a [water] pump. 聽She hasn鈥檛 been understanding that the signs Sullivan is making in her hand correspond to the real world. And they鈥檝e just had this huge fight and both are covered with all the food they have just thrown at each other, and then Annie Sullivan pumps the water over Helen鈥檚 hands and automatically signs the word water into the palm of her hand, and in an incredibly moving moment, after all these months and months without any connection, Helen gets it for the first time,鈥 said Schmidt getting choked up. 鈥淔or the first time, she recognizes that this thing that鈥檚 being signed into her hand corresponds to this thing that鈥檚 in the real world. Once she gets that鈥攍anguage鈥攐f course everything changes.
鈥淚 wanted that powerful moment for Yoda. I wanted him to have purpose again; he鈥檚 no longer just a hermit that鈥檚 hiding out from the Empire, useless. He knows he has amazing purpose. I mean we all need that, right? We all need this sense that we have purpose, we are doing something that鈥檚 important, we are doing something that matters.
Replaying his favorite moments
鈥淎nd that鈥檚 what I wanted to do with him. It meant going back through the films, looking at him, taking notes on his speech, which was hard, trying to capture his attitude.
鈥淎t one point he says, 鈥楲uminous beings we are.鈥 I mean there鈥檚 this amazing optimism:聽 鈥榣uminous beings we are.鈥 That鈥檚 pretty impressive. So that鈥檚 a line I used because I thought that was so powerful and something that is so easy to miss in our own humanity.鈥
In his hours of studying Yoda, Schmidt said that line was his favorite. But, as for favorite scene?
鈥淚 think the best one is in the second film. There鈥檚 been the whole rebellion and Yoda comes in and he鈥檚 got his crutch and his cane and he鈥檚 limping. And he鈥檚 SO slow and Count Dooku is so powerful, and you think, wow this is going to be awful,鈥 says Schmidt laughing, before his jaw nearly drops, 鈥渁nd then he drops his cane and he whips out his lightsaber and he鈥檚 doing twirls and he鈥檚 going crazy and he鈥檚 attacking him and he鈥檚 jumping from place to place,鈥 continues Schmidt as if he鈥檚 surprised at what he鈥檚 saying. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 so amazing because you don鈥檛 expect it; you have no sense that鈥檚 going to happen. And then he picks up his cane again.聽
鈥淪o, in the story, just to kind of celebrate that scene, I have him remember the moment when he walks into a Jedi academy with all the younglings and he struggles in with his cane and then he drops it and does all his amazing moves. Then he picks the cane up again and no one knows if he needs it or not.鈥
40 authors, one mission
It鈥檚 clear in listening to Schmidt that he enjoyed this unique project, and while he said that none of the co-authors of the anthology knew what one another was writing, they did have one thing that united them. None of the writers are getting paid, and all of the proceeds are going to First Book, an organization that provides 鈥渘ew books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need鈥濃攕omething near and dear to Schmidt鈥檚 heart.
鈥淚 go to about 50 schools a year, many of which are those inner-city schools and libraries that have hardly any resources at all. To know that both the publishers and LucasFilm and everyone involved in this project is aiming at supporting that,鈥攚ell, I鈥檓 so glad to be a part of that.鈥
The 496-page anthology will be released on Tuesday, October 3.
