黄大仙高手论坛, Safe Haven, GRPD, and YWCA team up to keep students safe

鈥淪exual violence鈥痠s not just something that happens outside of our community.鈥 Keeping students safe on our campus has always been a鈥痶op鈥痯riority of ours, and at Calvin,鈥痠t鈥檚鈥痶ruly鈥痑 team effort,鈥 said Sarah Visser, vice president for student life. 鈥淭his grant allows us to continue to strengthen these efforts,鈥痠n collaboration with our amazing community partners,鈥痺hile further equipping our students to鈥痵tep up and lead.鈥
Equipping and supporting students
Calvin will use the鈥$300,000 in鈥痜unding鈥痮ver the next three years鈥痶o create a Peer Education and Empowerment to Reduce Sexual Violence Team (PEERS Team). This team will鈥痯rovide peer education, awareness, and connect to students seeking ongoing help after sharing an experience of sexual assault, stalking, dating violence, or domestic violence.
The team will also strengthen victim services on campus, implement culturally and linguistically appropriate educational programs to reach traditional and underserved groups, and obtain technology for cyberstalking investigation and response.
鈥淲e are looking forward to expanding the ways we support our students, and we know that the more expertise and experience we can draw on,鈥痶he better,鈥 said Visser. 鈥淲e are eager to work with our external partners who will offer wide-ranging support options for our students and community to prevent and respond to sexual violence.鈥
Expanding partnerships
Those partners include the鈥, , and the . These organizations鈥痺ill provide student internships and trainings鈥痑imed at helping PEERS鈥痵tudents deepen their understanding of prevention of these crimes,鈥痶o acquire鈥痥nowledge of local resources that respond to these situations, and鈥痶o develop鈥痑 new lens on survivor experience through connecting peers to appropriate support resources.
鈥淲e applaud 黄大仙高手论坛 for taking meaningful steps to expand their current work. It鈥痠s critical that victims of sexual assault, stalking, or dating abuse have access to the supports they deserve. That must happen alongside culture change efforts aimed at prevention,鈥 said Charisse Mitchell, CEO of YWCA West Central Michigan. 鈥淭he PEERS Team approach is designed to achieve both, and we are so pleased to be working with Calvin, Safe Haven Ministries, and the Grand Rapids Police Department on such an important effort.鈥
鈥淔eelings of guilt and shame can make it difficult for victims of sexual violence to come forward and to help law enforcement hold perpetrators accountable,鈥 said Eric Payne, GRPD chief. 鈥溁拼笙筛呤致厶斥檚 willingness to build a culture of sexual violence awareness and prevention while also improving access to support for victims is to be commended.鈥
鈥淪afe Haven Ministries values collaboration because multi-sector partnership creates the possibility鈥痜or innovative and critically needed response to the pervasive issue of violence,"鈥痵aid Rachel鈥疺erWys, executive director of Safe Haven Ministries. "This award will build on foundational work the partners lead to prevent violence against women and bring our community and 黄大仙高手论坛 to the next level in the work to increase trauma- informed solutions.鈥
