New White Coat ceremony formalizes transition from student to nurse
The nursing class of 2019 took part in Calvin鈥檚 first-annual nursing , a formal event that marks the transition from pre-nursing courses to working with clients in clinicals.
The ceremony was held on the afternoon of September 7 in the Chapel Undercroft. Calvin College was one of two colleges in Michigan that received a grant from the for the ceremony. 鈥淗istorically in nursing, there鈥檚 a transition from classes to hands-on work with clients. That鈥檚 a good transition to mark,鈥 said Barbara Timmermans, associate professor of nursing at Calvin College.
White Coat Ceremony
Before the nursing students and faculty shared lunch, professor Gail Zandee explained the nursing schedule for their next two years, encouraging students in the important work they鈥檇 be engaging in. 鈥淲e see nursing not just as a job but as a calling; a way to use our gifts and be Christ鈥檚 hands and feet in world,鈥 Zandee said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e uniquely community-based. We [professors] want students to look at clients in the context of their family and community because that has a direct impact on that individual鈥攜ou need to care for individuals in their context.鈥澛
The group proceeded to worship to the songs 鈥10,000 Reasons鈥 and 鈥淏e Thou My Vision,鈥 with Timmermans on piano and senior nursing student Ben Cooper on guitar. The ceremony also included faculty washing students鈥 hands, Pastor Mary Hulst offering a blessing and students reciting an oath. 鈥淲e wanted these students to think about doing their nursing work with hands that are consecrated to God,鈥 Timmermans said.
A call to serve
Calvin鈥檚 nursing department, in sharing the mission of Calvin, seeks to engage in professional nursing education that promotes lifelong Christian service within a caring and diverse educational community.
鈥淲e want students to work through their lens of faith,鈥 Timmermans said. 鈥淭he Arnold P. Gold Foundation is about keeping healthcare human, and we want to do that as well, but from the perspective that all humans are God鈥檚 creatures and image bearers.鈥
Junior Clair Baade enjoyed the ceremony and is looking forward to her new experiences as a nursing major. 鈥淚 am very excited to enter this next chapter of my life,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 feel like that the past two years have been building up to this point. I can't wait to use what I have learned from the past two years and combine it with the practical skills I will learn through clinical and nursing classes.鈥
Baade also feels that her pre-nursing classes have prepared her well for the next two years. 鈥淧re-nursing classes were hard, but they did their job. Calvin has prepared me well spiritually, too. Entering this new chapter is transitioning me from a vocation as a student into my vocation as a nurse in order to serve the Kingdom of God.鈥
Jaclynn Lubbers, assistant professor of nursing at Calvin, has seen many nursing students express both excitement and fear at this point in their Calvin education, but she assures them that they aren鈥檛 being asked of anything they鈥檙e not ready for. 鈥淢y hope is that the ceremony gave these students a lens of faith from which they can start this new chapter,鈥 she said.聽
