When a roof is more than a roof

Wed, Apr 01, 2020

Amy Bosgraaf Alderink 鈥94 began her career jumping in construction dumpsters. Some days she still does.

A Latin and biology major, Alderink realized while doing her student teaching that she would be 鈥渁 horrible teacher.鈥 She went home to her family鈥檚 construction business in Holland, Michigan, and drove the waste truck, trying to figure out what to do next.

鈥淚 was surprised how much I liked the business,鈥 Alderink said. 鈥淚 never took a business class at Calvin, but I did learn to think independently, critically, and creatively.鈥 Soon she was the growing company鈥檚 鈥渃hief creative officer.鈥

Since the recession of 2007鈥2008, Alderink has channeled her construction creativity into the Holland nonprofit Homecor. As executive director, she oversees two types of projects.

The attention-getting project type is wholehouse renovation in the city鈥檚 core neighborhoods, like one that neighborhood kids called 鈥渢he spooky house.鈥 Vacant for 40 years, its roof leaked, and it was full of mold. With donations and zero interest loans, Homecor purchased the house, gutted it, renovated it, and sold it to a first-time homebuyer.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the drip of encouragement that spreads the ripple,鈥 Alderink said. 鈥淒isheartened neighbors see the change and want to invest in their own property.鈥

The quieter of Homecor鈥檚 two project types is its grant program.

鈥淭he city has programs to help low-income homeowners make structural repairs,鈥 Alderink explained. 鈥淲e bridge the gap for those who can鈥檛 meet all the city鈥檚 rules or can鈥檛 afford their portion of the repair. We also offer grants for curb-appeal improvements and energy efficiency.鈥

The get-the-job-done nature of Homecor suits her perfectly, Alderink said. 鈥淚鈥檓 task oriented. But sometimes I meet a homeowner who tells me, 鈥榃e just went through two years of cancer treatments, and the roof was the last thing we could think of.鈥 I looked at it as a roof. They needed a roof, we gave them a roof. But God reminds me that it鈥檚 more than a roof.鈥
