Biography

When I entered Calvin as a student in 2003, I thought I knew exactly what my path would be.  However, I soon realized that my plans were not God’s plans.  Upon graduation, I was still in a state of uncertainty about my direction, and I took a job working in a physical therapy clinic.  This had been one of my interests as an undergraduate student and at the time I thought could be a potential career path.  Through my experience at that job, I encountered people of all genders, cultures, ages, and I found that source of greatest enjoyment in that job was connecting with the patients who were there.

As I was beginning to explore additional opportunities in the helping profession, God quickly provided a path.  A patient of mine had been attending school in a counseling program at Cornerstone University and encouraged me to look into it.  Six months later, I was enrolled as a student.

The experiences I’ve had both through uncertainty about my direction and the joy of finding my calling has shaped the work I do as a counselor.  I thrive on the opportunity to walk with students as they wrestle with big, life-changing decisions and adjust to a different pace of life.  To fully help students realize their potential and thrive with the gifts and resources they have been given is what I try to do as a counselor.

While not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife and four kids.  You can usually find us outside enjoying God’s creation – whether it be at a park, hiking, fishing, or just enjoying our yard.  I enjoy running and golfing when I have the time to do it.  I enjoy all things Chicago sports, especially the Cubs.

Education

BS, Calvin (College) University, Biology/Psychology, 2007

MA, Cornerstone University, Counseling, 2015

Professional Experience

I am a licensed professional counselor and have the most experience working with the adolescent and young adult population.  As mentioned, I worked in the physical therapy setting after completing my undergraduate degree.  Throughout and after the completion of my counseling degree, I have been fortunate to work in a variety of settings including a private practice setting designed for college students and young adults, a non-profit agency for youth and families working in a crisis setting, and most recently for the state of Michigan in the rehabilitation and counseling area.  It has been my passion to focus on the college demographic and I am thrilled to be a part of the Center of Counseling and Wellness here at Calvin.
