Dr. Laura DeHaan

Dean of Curriculum and Assessment

Biography

Professor DeHaan teaches Marriage and Family, Lifespan Development, Mental Health in the Classroom, and supervises the internship practicum. She received her bachelor’s degree in New Mexico, and her masters and PhD from Purdue University in child development with an emphasis on adolescence (1997). Prior to coming to Calvin, she taught for eight years at North Dakota State University in the department of child development and family science. She has recently been working on a federally-funded research project examining rural alcohol use in the middle school years, finding that rural communities do contribute to adolescent drinking, above and beyond family and peer influences. Her research interests include identity development in adolescence, rural adolescent alcohol use and faith and religious development in adolescence and emerging adulthood.
