Counselor

Biography

While in college, I majored in Psychology with a minor in Family Studies. I鈥檝e always loved the field of education, but didn鈥檛 think I was cut out for the K-12 classroom. I decided to pursue a graduate degree in counseling and school counseling, with the intent of becoming a high school guidance counselor.  While in graduate school, I landed a job in academic advising at the local community college. At the time, I figured it would be great experience when I moved onto working with high school students, as I鈥檇 have a good understanding of what their first year or two of college would look like. Little did I know that job was the first step towards a career of working in higher ed.

I鈥檝e since served in both academic and career counselling and also taught undergraduate psychology courses. Additionally, I鈥檝e worked at a private practice that specializes in supporting college students. In short, I鈥檝e worked with college students for my entire professional career鈥攁nd I could not love it more! I am honored to support Calvin students as they navigate how to make sense of their story thus far and develop hope and resiliency for what is to come. I believe deeply that God has a plan and a purpose for each student who comes through our doors, and I am committed to supporting them on their journey to living into that calling!

Education

BA Psychology, Cornerstone University, 2004

MA Counseling and School Counseling, Central Michigan University, 2006

Professional Experience

I am a License Professional Counselor with experience working with adolescents and young adults in both academic and clinical settings. I have a particular interest in helping students discover and become who God has called them to be. Sometimes this is as 鈥渟imple鈥 as discerning a next step personally or professionally, and other times it requires deeper, heavier work like processing trauma, developing coping skills, or identifying and replacing irrational beliefs. Over the years, I have realized that most of my clients possess a deep rooted, often subconscious, belief that they are not 鈥渆nough鈥 in one way or another. Digging out and uprooting this belief and then replacing it with Truth has proven powerful time and again.

While I see great value in traditional mental health practices, I am also passionate about natural health and nutrition and am a Certified Health Coach. I believe whole-heartedly that our physical health directly impacts our mental health and vice versa. I love helping clients develop healthy habits and simple changes that support their bodies in a holistic way.
