First-Year Research Turns Up Gold

Tue, Apr 02, 2024
Matt Kucinski

Braden DeWeerd (Fremont, Mich.), Madison Hoogstra (Lansing, Ill.), and Sophie Hruska (Lowell, Mich.) have been named 2024 Goldwater Scholars. The scholarship, awarded by the Barry S. Goldwater Foundation, is widely considered to be the most prestigious award for undergraduate students in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering in the United States.

More than 1,300 students from 446 schools applied for the award, but only 438 students received it. Students who earned the award say that the environment at Calvin surely increased their probability of striking gold.

In the lab out of the gate

鈥淚 started research with Professor Benson the summer after my freshmen year,鈥 said Hruska, 鈥渨hich is somewhat uncommon to start as a freshman.鈥

Uncommon in higher ed? Yes. But not at 黄大仙高手论坛.

鈥淚 got involved in research after my freshmen year with Professor Vander Griend,鈥 said Hoogstra.

鈥淚 also started the summer after my freshmen year working with Professor Miller,鈥 said DeWeerd.

Leading in the lab

All three students were immersed in research before they even entered their second year. And they weren鈥檛 carrying out research for their professors, they were researching alongside them.

鈥淚鈥檝e just had so many great opportunities where professors have listened to my ideas and incorporated them into the research, and I think that鈥檚 really what鈥檚 helped me become a Goldwater scholar,鈥 said Hruska.

鈥淲e started a project with the Limongelli Lab in Switzerland and that has actually probably been what has helped me the most to become a Goldwater Scholar because Professor Vander Griend put me in charge of leading that whole research project,鈥 said Hoogstra.

Hoogstra said the collaboration led to this past summer her and a team of six Calvin researchers heading to Switzerland to share their research findings.

鈥淚t was really cool to be the project lead as a sophomore, when I think the youngest student there [at the lab in Switzerland] was a PhD student,鈥 said Hoogstra.

For DeWeerd, he鈥檚 now in his second research lab, this time with Professor Grasman.

鈥淏oth research projects have significant implications for human health in the region as well as environmental and wildlife population health,鈥 said DeWeerd. 鈥淎nd my current project feeds directly into multiple government agencies and so it has capacity to actually make significant policy change too.鈥

Learning and applying

The students research has also helped them discover their path forward.

鈥淩esearch really develops both interest and skills outside of a classroom setting. A lot of the skills are best learned through experience,鈥 said DeWeerd. 鈥淎nd for me, doing research that first year reshaped my entire plan for how I was going to approach the other three years of college, which then as you go, you can be more and more prepared for graduate school and start preparing much earlier.鈥

鈥淲hen you get that hands-on experience, it really changes how you learn in the classroom because instead of just memorizing information, you鈥檙e focusing on how can I apply this,鈥 said Hruska. 鈥淎nd it changes your interactions with your professors from seeing them as someone who is just teaching you, to now as someone you can interact with and collaborate with.鈥

Digging deeper

And the relationships built in the lab are ones the students see paying dividends far beyond their four years at Calvin.

鈥淗aving that extra one or two years researching or however many more compared to what it would be in a big R1 university allows you to get to know a professor so much better,鈥 said Hoogstra. 鈥淭hey can write such a good letter of recommendation for you, which is important for not only grad school and applications such as the Goldwater, but also for other internships.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 just been an amazing opportunity to work with professors who really care about your research and care about you as a person," said Hruksa. 鈥淭he Christian community is huge and just having that perspective on everything that you do, that it is not just about your research, it鈥檚 thinking about how it鈥檚 going to impact other people. It鈥檚 sitting down and having those conversations of 鈥榳hy am I doing these things and why am I choosing this for my future?鈥欌

The right choice

When each of the three scholars visited Calvin as prospective students a few years ago, they said 鈥渢he environment drew me in.鈥

Now, three years later, they are glad they didn鈥檛 resist.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been pretty much the most formative experience of my life, and I would not give that up,鈥 said DeWeerd. 鈥淔or me, it鈥檚 been an integration of coursework, research, social, as well as faith-based practices and at Calvin there hasn鈥檛 really been a clear distinction between those for me and I鈥檝e really enjoyed that because it doesn鈥檛 feel like I have to switch between different aspects of myself to do different things in my life. I鈥檝e really developed into kind of a whole person, and I think that Calvin has been a big factor in that.鈥

鈥淚鈥檓 a very indecisive person but coming to Calvin has been the one choice that I know has been right for me,鈥 said Hruska.

鈥淚 would choose Calvin again for sure,鈥 said Hoogstra.
